How can a person stand strong when the struggles and difficulties of life seem to be to difficult to handle? Is there a way to have joy even when life doesn't seem good? Is there a way to find peace with others and peace within ourselves when conflict arises? Is there a solution to the anxiety and stress that comes at us from all sides? In Philippians 4:1-9 the Apostle Paul addresses these questions and gives us hope and some practical advice for finding peace and rest.

So what’s the Point? God hates idolatry. He will not tolerate idolatry and hypocrisy in His church. Ananias and Sapphira loved their money and they loved their spiritual reputation. In order to keep them both they sold a field, lied about how much they sold it for to the church, and laid part of the money at the Apostle's feet. This, they soon found out, was a bad idea. Great fear fell upon all who heard about the incident.

Philippians Book Study part #8
By Trevor Schubert
Does the Bible address the difference between true Christianity and false Christianity? What makes a true believer? In Philippians 3:1-11 the Apostle Paul, refuting a false teaching, gives us the nature of a true Child of God.
As a summation, Christians are to have no confidence in their religious achievements. Like the tax collector in Luke 18, we must realize that we are morally bankrupt and cry out to God for mercy because we realize there is no way we can please God in our flesh. We must give up all hope in ourselves, and cling on to Christ in trust. He bears the wrath of our sin on the cross, and he credits His righteousness to us. When this glorious exchange takes place, we are given new life through His Spirit. In this new life through the Spirit, we can know Christ intimately here on earth and can look forward with great anticipation to meeting Him one day face to face.

In the Philippian church, there seems to have been some disunity and disagreements between various Christians. In this passage, God, through the Apostle Paul, calls the believers there to get along with one another and to be unified. How does Paul expect them to do this, what should they do, and what would this look like? To answer these questions, Paul calls us to look at who we are and look at Jesus Christ's example. In this, we see one of the clearest statements of who Jesus is and what He did to reconcile broken and sinful people to Himself.

The Apostle Paul has been imprisoned because of his work in proclaiming the good news of Jesus. Now Paul is possibly in danger of being put to death, however, Paul has joy because of his assurance of salvation! In this section of the letter, Paul shows us his heart's desire and his life's purpose. Paul lives to magnify Christ. In addition to this, he desires not to bring any disgrace or shame on Christ Jesus. Paul's example and attitude challenge us. Are Christ's reputation and glory what truly makes us come alive? Do we take joy in magnifying Christ, and do we truly desire to never bring shame and disgrace on Him whose name we carry (Christian)?

Today we pick up in our study of Philippians. We see the apostle Paul has been imprisoned because of his work in proclaiming the good news of Jesus. Paul's circumstances are rough. However, Paul shows his confidence in a God who is bigger than rough circumstances. In this section, Paul assures the Christians in Philippi, that God will accomplish His goals, in spite of opposition. Paul knows that God has caused his hard circumstances and persecution to actually advance the gospel! God is working in Paul, and Paul's attitude gives us a model to follow. We can trust in God to even use hardships to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We are beginning a series studying the book of Philippians. The book of Philippians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul (during 61 or 62 AD) to the Christians living in the European city of Philippi. Paul most likely wrote this letter to the Philippians while he was in prison as a result of preaching the gospel. In this letter, Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, thanks and encourages the Philippians for their partnership with Him in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. This personal note is filled with Paul's love, joy, and thankfulness for the believers in Philippi. One of the repeated themes of this letter is joy in the midst of adversity. Who better to talk about this subject than the Apostle Paul while he is in prison for doing no crime.

The Foundation of Forgiveness January 8, 2012

As we read the Bible, we realize both justice and mercy are godly virtues. With this in mind, it is very difficult to understand forgiveness, especially if you have been recently wronged. How can we forgive someone who has done something wrong and hurtful to us or to others? Shouldn't they receive justice? Isn't forgiving them just letting them off the hook? We are going to explore both the justice of God and the mercy of God while striving to understand how it is that He is both just and merciful. As we learn more about the character of God, we should strive to be like Him.

We continue to prepare our hearts for the coming Messiah, Jesus. We are going to talk about the forerunner to the Messiah, John the Baptist. John the Baptist is in many ways the bridge connecting the Old Testament prophesies about the Messiah to the person of Jesus. John's job was to prepare the way for the Messiah, by turning the hearts of the people back to God. We are going to explore how we should turn our hearts to God this Christmas season.

As we move through the Advent Season we continue to prepare our hearts for the coming Messiah, Jesus. Historically we know Jesus came over 2000 years ago fulfilling many of the Old Testament prophecies pertaining to the Messiah. However, some are still to be fulfilled in
His second coming. We want to follow the woman's "Seed", from Genesis 3:15, who God promises would receive a fatal blow by the Serpent, but would ultimately crush the head of the Serpent. With this promise, God gave humanity the hope to be brought back to peace with Himself, their creator, and ultimately to be freed from this fallen world.

Do you ever feel like you are living on autopilot, just going day to day through the motions? Get up go to school or work, go home, go to sleep and then do it all over again. Do you ever feel like you are almost in a mindless routine unfazed by the various encounters of your day? This is a common struggle for many believers. It is so easy, however, to forget that we are in a battle of epic proportions. Good versus evil and the consequences are of eternal value. Our enemy is wise and crafty, and it seems one of the most common ways believers are defeated is not by the blatant attacks but through subtle everyday distractions. The Ephesian believers were also familiar with these struggles. Paul, like a commanding officer preparing his troops for battle, charges them and us with urgency to engage this evil age wisely making the most of every opportunity while being controlled by the guidance of God's Spirit.

Each one of us has a story. We have a past (which many of us are ashamed of), a present, and a future to look forward to. The passage we are looking at today gives us a theological perspective on our story. Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, shows one thing we all have in common: we were all at one time dead to God. We were separated from Him, living a life that was focused on gratifying our own sinful lust. Because of this, we were deserving of God's wrath and punishment. However, even though we deserved God's wrath, God loved us, had mercy on us, bringing us from death to life! Through Christ's death and resurrection, we can be made spiritually alive. How can we not love Him, and give our lives to Him in light of what He has done for us!

How do we deal with temptation? What is our part in growing in godliness, and what is God's part in our growth? Do we passively "let go and let God" in regards to our growing in Chris- likeness or do we methodically work with all our own efforts to be more like Jesus. This passage, Phil. 2:12-18, gives us some insights into this often debated question, and helps us to understand the paradoxical nature of living out the salvation that God graciously gave us.

Philippians Book Study Part #1

Wisely Engaging God's World, October 11, 2011

I tried to listen to your September 16, Religion vs. Relationship study, but apparently it doesn't download on an ancient Mac. Anyway, reading the summary, I wonder if there isn't too much "weight lifting' involved in this description, or if it applies to more advanced believers? "We realize," "give up all," "fall on our knees," "cry out for mercy," etc., is pretty heavy stuff. I've known young children in pre-school or elementary age who have embraced Jesus in relationship without any concept of the theology. I wonder if some come to Jesus out of a divine drawing and undefined need in their heart, and the understanding comes sometime later?
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for the great comment and I'm sorry you could not hear the sermon. Try fbccasper.com in the "sermon" page if you want to hear it. I will try to figure out why it would not download. Regarding your question, this is a question that I have pondered myself. First, I do believe that all people come to God from a divine drawing, and maybe at first it is an "undefined need" in our heart. As we grow in our knowledge of God and of our own sinfulness, however, we will realize our great need of divine mercy. I also believe that conversion occurs only after hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ coupled with the life giving work of the Holy Spirit. To preface, do I have this figured out, not even close. As I think back on my own story, I am at a loss for when the act of salvation actually happened when I was a child. One thing for sure, though, we must realize in some sense, like the Tax collector in Luke 18, that we need God's forgiveness and that we must trust (better yet a child like trust) in Jesus for that forgiveness. I think most children can understand the tax collector's theology, "God, be merciful to me, sinner that I am!" (Luke 18:13, NET). I hope this remotely addresses your question. Thanks again for your thoughtful comment!
